Dr. Carlos Chernicharo got his PhD from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1990 and since then has been teaching and developing basic and applied Research at the Department of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering - Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil, in the field of anaerobic treatment of domestic sewage. Currently he occupies the position of full professor at the UFMG and coordinator of the National Institute of Science and Technology on Sustainable Sewage Treatment Plants (INCT Sustainable STP), leading a network of 7 important Brazilian research institutions. His current topics of research include post-treatment of anaerobic effluents, control of gaseous emissions and valorisation of the by-products of the treatment aiming at energy and nutrients recovery. In the last 25 years, he had the opportunity to be involved with the design and operation of large full-scale anaerobic sewage treatment plants in Brazil and abroad. He has also published various books and papers related to anaerobic treatment of domestic sewage.
